Marta

Marta was found by police acting on a tip from a neighbour in Stare Babice, Poland.

Six-year-old Marta had apparently been kept locked in a cage 4ft high and 3ft long, in a garden shed. When discovered, she was half-naked, malnourished, and covered with bruises. On discovery, Marta was taken to hospital. She had difficulty standing, and couldn't speak properly.

Apparently, she had been confined by her parents, Marek (44) and Malgorzata, because she was "handicapped". However, at hospital, she was diganosed only as having a slight mental disability.

The couple had three other children who were treated normally. Marta, however, had never attended kindergarten or been given medical treatment.
