Product Description The classic tale of adventure and romance—in a vibrant new package
Amazon customer review © Great story! Far better than any of the Tarzan movies I have seen. This book has ignited my interest in the classics from the past.
Amazon customer review © I grew up watching black and white films with Johnny Weismuller (sp?) as Tarzan. They were entertaining and engaged my young imagination. However as an adult, I wanted to read the origins of Tarzan and I'm glad I did. Edgar Rice Burroughs was a consummate storyteller. He knew how to spin an adventurous yarn. In the book Tarzan is noble but definitely savage. He eats raw meat. Actually prefers it that way. But the Tarzan of the book is more human than the Tarzan created for the silver screen. There were other things too that differed. Jane for example was not a British lady, but a gal from Baltimore, Maryland, and she had a nanny, a black woman named Esmeralda. Yes, for African Americans, you will find stereotypes. The book was written practically a hundred years ago, expect to find passages that make you think the author thought whites were superior to blacks. That was the thinking of his era. Later on, though, in other books he is more fair in the depiction of blacks, making them allies of Tarzan and even close friends. So those who're protesting that Edgar Rice Burroughs's books should be avoided by black people, forget about it. A good story is a good story. I say give his books a try.
